In 1830 Our Lady appeared to St Catherine Labouré in Paris and asked that a medal be struck to her design — rays falling from her open hands, twelve stars, and the words O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
Nearly two centuries later it is still the medal most often given at a baptism or a confirmation. Simple, Marian, and understood everywhere.
